Curiosity
We approach experiments with a focus on mechanism, measurement, and controls. This means staying open to new ideas, asking hard questions, and holding ourselves to the highest standards. We value creativity, reproducibility, and above all, the use of proper controls. Failure is not the end but part of the process—an opportunity to reflect, refine, and try again. We celebrate effort as much as outcomes, and we encourage thoughtful risk-taking, creative thinking, and rigorous execution as a path to discovery. We commit to using our science in the service of society, from advancing discovery to advocating equity.
Collaboration
We believe science thrives when people feel safe to ask bold questions, take risks, and support one another. Whether designing experiments or troubleshooting results, sharing credit or solving problems, we work as a team. We recognize that diverse perspectives and skills make the team stronger, and we create space for every voice to be heard. Our daily interactions are built on mutual respect, open communication, and a shared commitment to rigor and integrity. We strive to do our work with excellence, while cultivating a culture of purpose and collective success.
Mentorship
Mentorship is at the heart of our lab. Every trainee, regardless of experience level, is heard, supported, and challenged to grow. We guide one another not only in experiments and data analysis, but also through moments of doubt, growth, and celebration. We elevate each other to reach new heights, and our support extends beyond the lab—to career aspirations in academia, industry, or any chosen path. Success is shared, growth is intentional, and we aim to foster independence while ensuring every person feels valued as both a scientist and an individual.
Our Guiding Focus: Scale
Scale captures the core of our mission. We aim to scale the uncharted regions of the noncoding genome that govern cell identity and disease. We scale our approaches to measure biology in its full complexity – across cells, states, and systems. And we develop scales of measurement that are precise and powerful, combining multimodal high-throughput approaches, to probe the genome at unprecedented resolution.
The QRs in Quality Research
For us, quality research is Quantitative and Queryable, Robust and Replicable. These qualities keep our work transparent, testable, and useful to the broader community. We approach every experiment with precision, well-controlled design, and detailed record-keeping. Rigor matters to us — we treat it as a habit, not a hassle.
